You shave your legs and armpits, wax your bikini line, bleach your upper lip, and even pluck a few stray hairs on your chin. But what about those hairs on your stomach? You know—the ones that lead from your belly button down to your pubic area (men like to call theirs "happy trails." Cringe).

If that belly fuzz seems to have cropped up out of nowhere, it could signal a hormonal issue; you should ask your doc if your hormone levels should be checked. But if you've had hair on your abdomen pretty much since puberty, then there's no medical cause for concern. "It's so incredibly common, and it's determined primarily by genetics," says Chris G. Adigun, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in Chapel Hill, NC.

If you decide that you want your belly hair gone, here are four main ways to make it happen.

(Balance your hormones and lose up to 15 pounds in just 3 weeks!)

1. Shave it

You know the basic drill here—lather, shave, rinse. But before you reach for your standard cream and razor, think about the skin you're using it on. "Avoid shaving creams, [which are designed] for tougher skin, and try lathering Cetaphil cleanser with water," says Arielle Kauvar, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at New York Laser and Skin Care. While you're shaving, go with the grain (in a downward motion) to avoid ingrown hairs. You'll get fewer nicks and cuts if you wait to shave until the end of your shower, when skin is most hydrated.

2. Wax it

A little bit of pain might go a long(er) way compared to shaving. "Waxing is usually performed at 2 to 4 week intervals, depending on hair growth rate," Kauvar says. Avoid exfoliating for several days before to avoid waxing any newly exposed skin layers. And, as always, make sure skin is clean and dry beforehand to get the best results. (Here are 7 signs you're about to get a terrible beauty service.)

3. Use a depilatory

Depilatories (think Nair or Veet) aren't as traumatizing to the skin and hair follicles as shaving or waxing, so they may help you sidestep razor burn or ingrown hairs. "When used correctly, depilatory agents can be really well-tolerated by most people," Adigun says. Still, some people are sensitive to the chemicals used (calcium thioglycolate and potassium thioglycolate, which physically weaken the hair), so be sure to test the product on a small portion of your skin before going all the way.

4. Laser it

If you really want to be free of your belly hair—and are willing to spend a few extra bucks—laser hair removal is your best bet."Because [belly hair] is so diffuse rather than just a few unwanted hairs, people who have it are usually excellent candidates for laser hair removal," Adigun says. The results are permanent, though you'll need about 6 to 10 office visits to get the job done. That's because hair grows in three phases—growing, transitional, and resting—and lasers only target hairs during their growing phase. Before signing up for a package, Adigun says you should make sure your dermatologist thoroughly evaluates your skin to make sure you're good, as certain lasers don't work as well on some skin types.
