Red Dead Online may have been designed with a posse in mind, but in Rockstar's Wild West open-world, sometimes you want to venture out on their own, admire the sunset, catch fish, and find your own enjoyment.

Don't worry, there are plenty of solo activities to be found in Red Dead Online. Steer clear of the chaos or dive right into it as a solo gunslinger, complete solo missions, or set your sights on a prize bounty animal. Here are our tips to have fun as a solo player in Red Dead Online.

14 Work On Your Camp

One of the first things you'll do in Red Dead Online is set up your camp. You are able to set up your camp across every region on the map whenever you like, and it will serve as a home for your character. While not as cozy as four walls and a roof, it certainly does the job - and will do so better as you upgrade it.

As you play, you'll be able to purchase upgrades for your camp, increasing the decoration, services, and overall homely feel of it all. This makes for a nice way to go camping, setting up your base wherever you like, and spending some time relaxing between missions.

13 Fishing Is Best Enjoyed On Your Own

Fishing works the same in Red Dead Online as it does in the base game: buy your lure, acquire a rod, and find a spot to set up for the day. There are 15 types of fish to catch in Red Dead Online and they're spread out all over the map, which makes catching them all a journey of exploration as well as relaxation.

Some fish are worth more than others at the local butcher. Your ordinary Bluegill, the most common fish, sells for less than a dollar. Then there's the Steelhead Trout, one you'll need to catch to complete all the fishing challenges. The Northern Pike, who will give your fishing rod a proper wrestle, regularly sells for five dollars. Fishing is arguably one of the more lucrative solo activities in RDO.

12 Hunting

Out in the wilds with a rifle and an empty cart. There's nothing quite like hunting solo in Red Dead Online. Keep the hunter's mindset during your everyday activities and you can make a nice bit of money on the side.

Whether you opt for the roadkill strategy (flattening rabbits with your cart) or go for some high-octane buffalo massacres, hunting in Red Dead Online is rewarding and a pretty satisfying way to spend an afternoon. You can even blast some seagulls out of the air if you feel like it. Plus, on solo missions, you don't need to share out the rewards.

11 Enjoy The Scenery

As a solo player, you can take everything in your stride. Red Dead Online is just as immersive and beautiful as the main game's storyline, although there are obviously fewer storylines to get involved with.

Red Dead Online is all about those random moments and spontaneous occurrences. You never know what you might see or find on a sightseeing mission through the mountains, forest, and plains. Keep an open attitude and embrace the adventure and there is no experience quite like soloing in RDO.

10 Visit The Van Der Linde's Camp Locations

A little more specific on the sightseeing side of things - why not go and visit the locations you may know so well from the base game's story. Each of the locations the Van Der Linde group used to camp throughout the story are available to visit throughout the map.

Sure, you probably already spent a lot of time in each of those camps as Arthur, but now you can visit from an outside perspective, and explore the locations while uninhabited. This goes for any other story locations you would like to visit, too.

9 Stranger Missions

Stranger Missions are simple side-quests offered across the map. They appear as a little Orange person icon on your map and can be completed for some decent rewards. Don't worry: these missions aren't too difficult and can definitely be completed by a solo player.

There's good variety when it comes to Stranger Missions as well. Not every mission will be the same, which makes the grind a lot easier. You might be sent to hunt a particular animal, escort a caravan across the plains, or carry out some paid killings. Some missions increase your honor, others decrease it. It's all down to what sort of life you want to lead in Red Dead Online.

8 Get Involved With A Showdown Series

The Showdown Series is a selection of competitive PVP game modes designed to make it easier to get right into the fight. Causing chaos in Red Dead Online is not a difficult task, but the Showdown Series does offer more structure and is a lot of fun even as a solo player.

Rockstar has added lots of new Showdown Series over the years, although some of the concrete favorites for solos include Most Wanted and Make It Count. These game modes are usually based on an individual's PVP skill rather than a team, ideal for a solo player looking for fun or to improve their gun skills.

7 Join A Random Posse

Just because a player enters the world of Red Dead Online on their own it doesn't mean they have to stay on their own. Enter the Free Roam menu and check under the Posse tab. Even if you don't have any friends online there might be a gang out there with a spot for your cowboy talents.

Posses can get up to all sorts of chaos, or organize a hunting party or fishing trip. Being a posse offers the advantage of group rewards, the ability for players to assist with takedowns, and picking up players who have taken one too many bullets. Red Dead Online can be a dangerous undertaking for a solo player. Safety, as they say, in numbers.

6 The Telegram Missions

Back in February, Rockstar launched a new type of solo mission for Red Dead Online players: the Telegram mission. These are unique because they place the player in a solo lobby, away from griefers, hackers, and angry posses on the lookout for an easy solo player to take down.

There are currently three different types of Telegram missions, which can be collected from the player's camp or post office. One takes you on a blistering adventure to tame a wild Arabian steed, whereas another involves a jewel heist. This is the sort of solo content many Red Dead Online fans were asking for, and Rockstar has delivered.

5 Go Treasure Hunting

If you're confident in your skills as a solo player, treasure hunting is another activity that can be pursued in Red Dead Online's Wild West. A player will randomly unlock treasure maps by completing missions and other tasks. These are accessed from the Satchel and give the player a spot on the map to head to.

Finding the treasure isn't too complicated. Head to the right spot and you'll feel your controller vibrate when you're near the treasure. Walk in any direction and you should feel the controller start to vibrate more. Follow the vibrations.

4 Become A Trader

A Trader is one of the five specialist roles available in Red Dead Online. To access the Trader lifestyle, a player will need to first purchase a Butcher Table for their camp. This costs around 15 Gold Bars, so some grinding will be necessary.

The Trader role allows the player to build a profitable merchant empire by hunting animals and turning their materials into useful goods. Everything is funneled through camp inhabitant Cripps, and he needs to be regularly resupplied with everything he needs. Watch out for rival players that might want to snatch all your hard work from under your nose.

3 Become A Collector And Explore The Wild West

This is another role suited to a solo player who values exploration over gunning down other players. To start the Collector Role a player needs to first encounter Madam Nazar and acquire the Collector's bag. You can read more about the Collector in our useful guide.

Once you've got the bag you can begin hunting for various treasures dotted around the world. These might be some of the rare tarot cards (usually found in abandoned camps) or buried treasures dug up with your Collector's shovel.

2 Blood Money Missions

On July 13, 2021, Rockstar added a new update for Red Dead Online called Blood Money. With this update, there are new mission opportunities available to get involved in some criminal underworld business.

The various crimes and missions can be completed co-operatively, but you are also able to take them on solo if you wish. More missions are always a good thing, and this expansion offers up plentiful content to delve into - whether it's robbing stages or pulling off heists.

1 Of course, Shoot Up The Town, If You Like

Well, this one is obvious. You've spent a lot of time wandering, fending off other players, and completing a multitude of missions. You have that itch for action that just needs to be scratched.

Head on over to any of the towns, pull out your best firearms, and let loose. It's needless to say that you will lose honor doing this, but it's worth it. Take on smaller towns such as Valentine and Strawberry, and then see how you handle the likes of Blackwater and Saint Denis. It's not honorable in the slightest, and the law will hate you, but it is definitely fun.
